Who am I? You can call me Gislebertus Hieronymus Anonymous…oh wouldn’t that be great if that was my real name…
What do I do? I am a biblical scholar.
What do you believe? I believe there is no God. I am an atheist.
Why do you believe that? Well I guess that’s just my experience of life. I have never experienced anything to suggest otherwise.
If you’re an atheist, why Biblical studies? Because I have a general love of history and believe it or not there really is history in the Bible. I did not set out in life to become a Biblical scholar…it’s just where I ended up. I have a love of literature so what could be better that studying one of the most influential pieces of literature ever written?
Do you have a problem with religion? Not in general no. I’m not a militant atheist who thinks all religious people are idiots. If I was I wouldn’t survive in Biblical studies. I have problems with certain aspects of religion…or more specifically religious practice and I explore these in the blog.
Were you ever religious? No.
What’s this blog all about? Basically it’s to document my experiences and thoughts as an atheist in a theist dominated field.

Why isn’t this updated very often? Because I’m very busy…
Why do you write this anonymously? Simply because as an atheist in a field dominated with theists things can be difficult. I don’t hide my atheism but I don’t want anything I put on this blog, which is just my own thoughts, to damage my career. My employers are aware of my atheism. Also, places I work for, often with a religious ethos, don’t like people they employ writing about why they’re wrong online…so anonymity keeps my employers from having problems with me. My location is not a secret either but I keep it vague…just mentioning the country I’m in from time to time.
